Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks

Volume 8, Issue 28

June 9, 2004

Wow. You can tell it's 86 days until the man burns just by checking the size of this newsletter.

And with so many SF friends returning from Texas with stories of goats and wooden monkeys and mayonnaise-eating performances at Burning Flipside (population this year: 1330, not counting livestock), the Jack Rabbits are kicking themselves for missing it this year. (Congrats on a great event, y'all.)

If you check out the "Events and Happenings" section below, you'll see that there's plenty going on around the country (LA! NY!New England!), and no need to wait these next 91 days out without a little taste of what it means to burn.

"Participate" is downright chock-full this week too, with opportunities to get involved off and on the playa. Two busy burners have created fun ways to re-immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the desert (or get a little taste of what to expect if it's your first time). Da Rat is ready to take your bike rental reservation out of Reno and save you faraway travellers the trouble of buying a bike you can't take home anyway.

We're also excited to report great news about our event's BLM permit - check it out in "BRC News", along with ticket info, some great press, and more. Best of all, months of (near herculean) organization-wide effort culminates at last: the 2003 Afterburn Report is now available! (See below.)

We are proud to announce that the 2003 Afterburn Report has been completed, and is now live on the Burning Man website. You can find links to it on the Burning Man homepage, or directly at http://afterburn.burningman.com/03/.

For those of you who don't know, this is a fairly herculean task, incorporating work from a long list of contributors -- from writers to HTML coders, image jockeys to quality assurance testers. The end result, I'm sure you will agree, is a *very* impressive recount of the activities, events, and goings-on that made Burning Man 2003 the successful event that it was. The Afterburn Report is a key representative component of Burning Man's history and legacy.

One thing that really struck me as I worked on the project, is how incredible everybody involved in the Burning Man Project is. If you read just a few of those articles, you quickly realize the unbelievable amount of work that has been done -- out of pure love for the event -- by dedicated staffers and volunteers to make Burning Man a reality. To say it's an annual miracle would not be overstating it. I am extremely proud to be a part of this amazing team.

It's difficult to give full credit to all those involved without giving you a short novel to read, but special thanks go out to everybody who put in the extra effort required to pull this all together, and make it look great, including Dave Marr who did the bulk of the coding, David Talley (aka "Booker") for some fantastic editing work, and Heather Gallagher (aka "Cameragirl") for the beautiful images! And a very special thanks to Bliss, who managed this project with grace, and without killing anybody. The comprehensive list of contributors is presented at the end of the report.

BURNING MAN GETS TWO-YEAR PERMIT IN BLACK ROCK DESERT

It's true! You may have seen in the news that our city has been granted

a permit from the Bureau of Land Management to rise for not just ONE but

the next TWO years. This is unprecedented; for the last fourteen years

we have applied for a new permit each year. Thanks to all of YOU for

showing that a city of thirty thousand conscientious individuals really

CAN respect the land and leave no trace.

The below quote from a BLM official (which ran on the AP wire) gets to

the heart of the matter. Let's keep up the good work and keep setting

the standard!

"'Burning Man has an excellent track record,' said Dave Cooper of the

BLM’s Winnemucca field office. 'This group teaches and practices leave

no trace and other large events can learn a lot from it.'"

GONE OFF DEEP SEEKS FOOTAGE

A little bird flew to us from Austin and told us that the Gone Off Deep crew need a little help from the community, to finish out their delightful little coming-of-age film about a superhero bank teller.... wait. That's not it. Their year-long study of Burning Man, "Beyond Black Rock" is thisclose to completion, but we need additional footage to round out the tale.

Specifically, they're seeking video/stills of the linesweeps during cleanup, some clear and close aerials of the city, and video or stills of regional burn events.

If you can help, please contact the effervescent Damon Brown at info (at) goneoffdeep.com .

SOUNDS OF BURNING MAN: AVAILABLE NOW!

Sound Man/Steve Evans writes:

"Dear Burners,

I've just completed 'The Sounds of Burning Man' project that has

resulted in an hour of sound from Burning Man 2003. This work contains

dialog, music, art sounds, etc.; anything with an audio signature that

communicates something or tells a short audio story about being at

Burning Man.

This work is divided into 15 themed tracks. It is an audio CD in length.

Go to www.TheSoundsOfBurningMan.org to find out more, sample it, and

download it.

This is a gift to the Burning Man community, not a commercial product,

so it is free. The liberal copyright encourages wide spread copying,

distribution, and presentation of this work. Burn it onto and CD and

give it to another Burner to show your love!

After you have downloaded the entire work, find a quiet room in which

you can spend an hour, don some headphones, close your eyes, and be

prepared to be transported back to Burning Man by way of the magic of

sound and your own memories.

Thanks you for being part of the Burning Man community. You all mean a

great deal to me.'

INFORMATION FOR THE ASPIRING ARTIST - FROM THE ARTERY TEAM

So you want to make art for the playa, do you? Right on, we want you to as well! Now, you may or may not know this, but you can’t just build something really cool and plop it out on the playa, without letting us know first. Yeah, I know … life’s rough.

It’s easy, though. All you’ve got to do is read our art installation guidelines (www.burningman.com/themeart) and fill out our on-line questionnaire (http://forms.burningman.com). We’ll give you a call to talk about your piece, and make sure you’ve got everything you need before you get to the desert.

When you get to the playa, you’ll need to check in with us at The Artery in Center Camp, and our faithful volunteers will get you all set up, and take you out to where your installation will be placed. It’s fun, trust me.

We are really looking forward to everybody’s creative contribution this year!

GOT CARPET?

Matt "Hazm@" Morgan, DPW Materials Wrangler, writes:

Is your brother-in-law closing the doors on his carpet warehouse, for

good? And he wants to donate ALL that carpet to a worthy cause? Do you

know a guy in the carpet biz who, for some reason, ordered WAY too much

carpet and now wants to unload it? If you've got a line on carpet

sources, PLEASE let me know. The Playa is a harsh mistress and she

makes a mess on the carpet every year so we always need more.

Specifically, we need between 10 and 15k sqft of the stuff. So, what

I'm interested in is bulk stuff. Please don't offer the carpet you just

pulled out of your living room. We appreciate the sentiment, but little

scraps are more trouble than they are worth. Thanks for your attention.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled program. Send tips to

RAT'S BIKES OPENS FOR FAR-OFF TRAVELLERS

It's the first of June and Rat's Bikes are open to all Burners who live

1,000 miles or more from Reno. {If you're unfamiliar with Rat's Bikes,

see Burning Man Update V8:#25:04.23.04, or write me for details at:

nv_desert_rat@nvbell.net }

This year I also have a unicycle and an adult trike available. These

are the only bikes that will require a deposit.

If you can't pick up and return the bikes in Sparks, just east of

Reno, or if you don't live at least 1,000 miles away, please don't ask

for a reservation!

A few bike racks for use on cars will be free for use, while they

last.

I still have roughly 100 bikes available, but I can't guarantee for

how long, so if you still need wheels for the playa, don't delay too

long!

Again, the bikes are $40.00 USD each and I accept personal checks or

Paypal. For complete info, write me at the address above. Thanks!

ANNOUNCING MISS BLACK ROCK CITY BEAUTY PAGEANT 2004

Calling Miss Texas and Miss New York! Calling Miss Disorient, Miss

Thunderdome, Miss TOA, and Miss HOTD!

It’s time to take beauty out of the hands of corporate America and back

into the eyes of the beholder. At the 2004 Burning Man, Asylum will hold

the First Annual Miss Black Rock City Beauty Pageant. Participation is

open to all men and women, all sexual preferences or identities, all

theme camps, villages, tribes and tents.

Come help celebrate your tribe’s uniqueness and beauty: be yourself,

wear what you want, and help put a face to your camp and to represent

the best of Burning Man. To make this event a success, Asylum would

like to see contestants from all the theme camps. It would be wonderful

if each theme camp / village / region was represented at the pageant, so

that the full spectrum of identities that comprise our city can be

appreciated at one event, at one time on the playa.

The competition will begin on Thursday, September 2 with a preliminary

event, which will include contestants running an obstacle course

carrying trays of beverages. The Prelims are open to all, with 10

finalists (and five alternates) moving on to the main competition on

Friday, September 3. The Pageant will feature the Dustwear (instead of

swimwear) competition, the Illumination wear (instead of evening gown)

competition, as well as interviews and a Talent competition where

contestants can show-off their creativity and uniqueness.

REV BILLY IN NYC: FIRST AMENDMENT MOBS and FLY THEM TO LONDON

1. First Amendment Mob #10 and COUNTING

2. Help the Church spread the word to London!

1. FIRST AMENDMENT MOB at GROUND ZERO

note from the rev --

The pleasure of reciting the single sentence which is the 1st Amendment,

when you've repeated it, say, ten times, is hard to describe. Let's

call it FREE-FEELING.

Take your cellphone and call someone out in the world who has the words

in front of them. They can prompt you as you insidiously bring this

radical seed of freedom to Ground Zero.

Places are made by words, and the words that claimed 9/11 have created

havoc around the world. We must replant Ground Zero with the seed-words

from our Constitution.

How to do it: Runs from 6:30pm-7pm EVERY TUESDAY

Come with your cellphone to the WTC Path Station on the northeast corner

of Ground Zero, across from Trinity Church. Come down the steps and

don't say hello to us -- just call someone and begin the words. Say

them conversationally, any way they come out is good. If police follow

you, ignore them; there's nothing they can do.

You can get in the stream of commuters in order to give them the whole

sentence. You can stand still and let them catch a single phrase. At

the end, we gather to recite together rhythmically for a while, and then

at 7 PM, we stop. Sometimes we talk for awhile. After all, one of our

freedoms is "peaceable assembly."

Here it is: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of

religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the

freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably

to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of

grievances."

2. Your Choir needs WINGS to cross the Pond:

Help us (25 Singers and a Preacher) fly to London. We're $4,000 short.

We're passing the plate -- any $5 helps a lot. Give to the church and

your soul feels light and breezy. Please mail money in any form to

REVEREND BILLY PO 1556 NYC 10013.

Tax write off opportunity: Write the check to "Franklin Furnace" and

mail to 45 John Street, NYC, 10038.

Thanks,

Rev Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping
