do you guys still read this?
comment if you do, i may temporarily use it for statistics purposes if that's ok.

especially since i want you to be all of or part of my statistics team for the bouts in portland.
right now i think that ideally we would want to have one stats sheet per team per period filled out at each bout. this is eight sheets of data total, four teams each playing two periods. which would take at least two people, one person having a sheet for each team. if there were more people it could be broken up more to make things easier, four people would be an ideal number i think (but really i have no idea since i've yet to see it done).

here are examples of what i'm copying to make up our stat sheets:

Hi there,

I have never posted here before, but I need some information about SPSS and figured this would be the right place to look!!

So yeah, I am doing an assignment on SPSS, but I can't access the tutorial for some reason so I don't even know if I'm doing it right. I checked the SPSS website for information, but I'm either blind or retarded and can't find any online tutorials either. My stats prof also doesn't offer help for SPSS and says that the tutorial should give me all the information I need to complete the assignment.

So you see my stress, I hope.

Can anybody help?

Also, I have two questions that I don't know which tests to use for. Would anybody be willing to spare 5 minutes of their time to read over the questions and let me know if I've chosen the right test? These being t-tests, independent-samples, etc.

I thank you kindly in advance,

why it is incorrect to perform a parametric test using ordinal data, and why is a non-parametric test preferable?

i just signed up for health insurance. bring on the dangerous desert climate. guess i'm going. looks like i have a ride with the badvibes crew in seattle going on friday the 27th i think and coming back before the 9th since i start work again on the 9th at 9am. eek.

i should order some pharmies off the internet just in case i need to self medicate. investing in a good first aid kit would be wise at the very least.

task of the week.

i think someone should make up a schedule of burning man that goes from 9am to 9am (primitive lighting in the statisticians barn at night would be enough for people to fill out surveys i think) with three hour increments and about five spaces for each increment.

then we can pass it around and write when people are willing to volunteer to take surveys (post it on the eplaya?).

this can also be a recruiting thing too, since people who would sign up should be ones who are going to attend the event. these people might need a place to camp too. like those people who emailed joe a while back. and others hopefully.

we can always revise things later, but it'd be good to make a schedule for the entire time even if it's just an estimation. we may have people who volunteer to take surveys and end up staying all day long rather than just for their shift. hopefully this sort of overlap will negate the no shows/late arrivals.

tomorrow i'm going to talk to my newest employer about potential time off this summer. i don't want to work the online job from august 12 to september 12 but the new employers might not be down for me taking that many days off. we'll see. if anything, i simply won't take time off for phoenix festival. lets keep our fingers crossed.

Fuck only 99 days left. So far I have 1 camp member (I think) and no particular plan. This year's MoS may be mostly self-serve. Not quite the impression I wanted to make if they give us center camp placement. Hmm.

Hi there!
I'm a regional and I am trying to get more new yorkers to BM than
californians by 2010.
would you be so kind as to add to the question of where you are
from...New York city? that way I can see if we are getting our peeps
out to the playa more and more every year or not...
it would warm my cold new york heart.

thanks so much
with lots of love and thanks!

I and my lifemate are coming to Burning Man (for the first time ever) this
year, and browsing through the theme camps and stuff I ended up to the pages
of Ministry of Statistics. Brilliant.

The question is, can we join? We cannot bring much stuff other than our own
camping necessities - flying over from Finland via speeding two weeks in
Mexico before coming to US - but we do bring two pairs of hands, two brains
with math/stat rudimentaries (I work with medical data analysis, the life
mate's a computer programmer), and as much fun as can possibly survive the
desert conditions. We are not inexperienced campers but this is by far the
longest time we've spent in an actual desert (not many of those in Finland,

We are ready to participate in anything from building up the camp to
post-BM-analysis of the survey data. We will most likely be in somewhere in
California on 25th August and on site sometime between 28th and 30th,
depending on all kinds of stuff.

You can find us on the web at http://www.iki.fi/janka/ and

Subject:meeting stuff reposted, i deleted the old post
Posted by:oven.
Time:1:02 am.
When: TBD
Where: Joe's swanky apartment (inquire within if directions needed)
Why: Because we need to be organized and we're cool motherfuckers
Who: Anyone interested in participating in the MoS camp at BM2004

Agenda so far for the discussion:

---recruiting more statisticians (anyone else we might know of going to the playa who would be a positive addition to the camp), seeking non-camp people to volunteer to give surveys, possibly posting on the e-playa asking for volunteers

---having a schedule of times to work for statisticians and non-camp volunteers, maybe even starting to go public with this once we decide for sure

---more discussion on renting a vehicle/trailer to haul mos stuff out there, splitting the cost, researching prices, and any other possible transpo issues

---what to do for a MoS gift. Like a little pendant with our logo for instance.

---send blurb to community@burningmanseattle.com for http://burningmanseattle.com/people/theme.asp

---write/type out a tentative timeframe for accomplishing tasks that need completion

I predict this will be about a 30-45 minute discussion, all distractions (kittens, boob tube) aside. Afterwards, if we feel inclined, we could go out somewhere as a group, or possibly have dinner before/during the meeting.

Also, feel free to comment/edit this post to add/remove items. I volunteer to be the notetaker for the meeting, and will post results after we meet so that they can be discussed online.

ps. this is just to bounce ideas back and forth...it's not something anyone is required to be a part of. basically the first few will probably be brainstorming sessions where we go over what's been discussed online in this community already. don't feel obligated to attend, participation in these meetings doesn't mean a person can't be a part of the theme camp.

from a seattle announce email:

2. Theme Camps

As was recently announced in the Jack Rabbit Speaks newsletters, the
application for theme camps and villages is now available on the Burning
Man web site:

If you're submitting an application for your camp, take a couple extra
minutes and send me a blurb that I can add to this page:
http://burningmanseattle.com/people/theme.asp (send blurb to community@burningmanseattle.com)

As you can see, I've only received info from a handful of camps so far,
and I'd really like to get stuff posted early rather than later this

joe, would you send them a blurb? since anna's in seattle i think we could be listed with seattle people.

edited to add: we can write a blurb on the 16th if we want.

Could everyone please take a moment to go by the web page and look it over? I'll be putting some work into it updating thing over the weekend.

If anyone has any actual web skills or knows anyone who has some maybe they could take an AR to actually make the page look GOOD.
